HI THERE!
My name is Sheridyn, I live in Adelaide, South Australia and I have recently finished my four year bachelors degree in education specialising in early childhood. For the last four years I have been working in a child care centre doing casual relief work and running school holiday care programs at the same centre and as mentioned studying. Now that my studies have come to an end (for now at least) it is time for me to enter the real world of full-time work, bills, moving out, and generally being more organised in life. I am hoping to get straight into teaching, whether it be full-time, part-time or just relief teaching for my first year.
My reason for making this page is because in late August (2013), during one of my last ever university tutorials, one of my teachers came around to all the early childhood classes to tell us about an amazing opportunity being offered in late October-November. The opportunity was to go to the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY Lands) in the far north-west of South Australia for a two week work experience placement, which could possibly lead to a job next year (2014). It was all expenses paid and of course would be an experience of a lifetime, so of course I put my hand up to go. After answering a set of questions and going to an interview, I was invited to go on this adventure and so I decided I would do a blog so that my friends and family could see what I would be getting up to, as the reception for certain phone companies may not be of great quality in the area I am going to.
I feel that professionally this will be an amazing experience for me to see what it is like to teach in remote areas of Australia and gain a deeper insight into Australia's Indigenous culture, which sadly can often be only be briefly looked at in schools and in some cases even forgotten or overlooked by many Australians today. Personally I think this experience will really allow me to become more independent and grow up a bit. I will also be given the opportunity to see parts of Australia, the land, the animals and the people, that some may never see.
